D.J. caught her breath and forced her gaze away. Such thoughts weren't for her. She should be thinking about what she would do if the captain found out Lou had invited her along today. She wouldn't stand for Lou getting in trouble. If worse came to worst, perhaps McCall would get Lou off the hot seat with Captain Miller by using his influence with the mayor. She'd even be willing to ask for McCall's assistance, debase herself, grovel, whatever, if she could help Lou. Of all the cops on the Lakeview PD, Lou was the best. He'd always treated D.J. with respect. He only called her "sweet pea" when none of the other officers were around. She couldn't expect him to totally abandon her childhood nickname. Sometimes she was hard put not to call him "Uncle Lou," as she'd done since she'd first met him. Lou Clark was her father's best friendand had been his partner for ten years. If it hadn't been for Lou, D.J. would never have known anything beyond apathy and disgust.
The only two emotions in her father's eyes whenever he looked at her.

Chris opened the front door of his house and stepped inside. Reaching out, he found the light switch and pushed. Electric sunshine poured down, making him blink.
He couldn't stop the afternoon's events from replaying in his head. The despair in Craig Packard's eyes had called out to the despair that had once haunted Chris during every moment of his life.
